Synopsis: PRINT: FASHION, INTERIORS, ART

Print is an exciting and dynamic area of design, with new analogue and digital technologies opening up a wealth of creative possibilities for designers in textile and non-textile media. Witty, hyperreal and luxurious print designs are being used by fashion designers and in interiors, while artists are harnessing the technology in their work to stunning effect. This showcase of the best printed textiles from around the world is divided into three key areas: fashion, interiors and art. In fashion, the book features innovative printed textile designs in haute couture, pret-a-porter and accessories from companies including Prada, Issey Miyake and Vivienne Westwood. The interiors chapter shows surfaces and interior products such as wallpaper, upholstered furniture, fabric hangings and floor coverings, and features a wide range of designers from Marimekko in Finland to Anna Glover in the UK. Fine-art prints and experimental work from international artists and designers such as Cristian Zuzunaga and Liberty Art Fabrics are represented in the final section.

CLARKE, SIMON

about author

Simon Clarke grew up in the St Ives area of Cornwall. This windswept terrain in South West England with it's rich creative heritage has and continues to influence aspects of his practice. Clarke from an early age has worked with both paint and photographic mediums. But as a student he studied printed textiles and decorative surfaces at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Middlesex and Birmingham City Universities. Afterwards he was a Fellow at Plymouth University where he spent the year painting. He then moved to live and work in Kenya. This resulted in photography taking precedent over paint and print mediums. During this time while a Lecturer in Fine Art at Kenyatta University he began to develop his approach towards photography. On returning to England, trips to New York and Paris provided new photographic impetus. Fieldwork back in Eastern Africa researching the printed Kanga cloth led to the completion of a doctorate degree from Birmingham City University in which photography and digital art informed methodologies and practical outcomes. Other places of photographic investigation have included the cities of Milan and Florence, Europe. Durban and Pietermaritzberg, South Africa as well as Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Mombasa and Lamu, Eastern Africa. In America academic work in California and Florida enabled photographic encounters in Los Angeles and Savannah. Clarke's current practice focuses on photography and digitally generated artworks realised on a variety of surfaces. Theoretical discourse from visual and cultural anthropology along with contemporary art a...
